Description
Nickel & Nickel "Branding Iron Vineyard" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Nickel & Nickel is renowned for its strict adherence to single-vineyard, single-varietal winemaking, engineered to showcase the pure, unblended terroir of individual Napa Valley microclimates. The Branding Iron Vineyard is a premier site located in western Oakville, situated on the valley's famous western benchland along the base of the Mayacamas Mountains.
The vineyard is named after a historic branding iron discovered on the property. Its terroir is defined by well-draining, gravelly clay loam soils, combined with a unique microclimate that benefits from warm daytime sun and consistent afternoon cooling influences from the San Pablo Bay. This daily thermal shift slows ripening, allowing the thick-skinned grapes to achieve excellent phenolic maturity and structural density without rushing sugar accumulation. For the highly lauded 2019 vintage—celebrated across Napa for its long, steady growing season—the liquid underwent a 17-month maturation program in 100% French oak barrels (approximately 50% brand-new wood) to frame the intense fruit with polished wood tannins.

Tasting Notes: Flavor and Aroma Profile
The 2019 vintage showcases the hallmark "soft toughness" of western Oakville benchland fruit, striking a balance between dark fruit extraction and a stony, savory structural framework.
-
Aroma (Nose): Sophisticated, expressive, and fruit-forward. The bouquet opens with an upfront core of blackberry preserve, plum sauce, and ripe black cherries, beautifully supported by secondary top notes of toasted vanilla cream, red licorice, sweet barrel spice, and a subtle, earthy undercurrent of fresh sage.
-
Palate (Taste): Medium-to-full-bodied, broad, and polished. The entry coats the tongue with an opulent wave of concentrated cassis and dark jammy fruit. Across the mid-palate, the wine's unique vineyard grip asserts itself, unrolling velvety, well-textured wood tannins integrated with flavors of dark baking chocolate, licorice, and a distinct, stone-like minerality. A sharp, tangy red-fruit brightness provides essential tension underneath.
-
Finish: Long, structured, and cleanly balanced. The intense dark-fruit characteristics drop away gracefully, closing with a trailing signature of dusty, mouth-coating tannins, cedar wood accents, and a lingering touch of warm oak spice.
Service and Decanting Rituals
-
Provide an Extended Decant: The 2019 Branding Iron possesses a firm, dense tannic core that requires oxygen to completely stretch out. Pour the bottle into a wide-bottom decanter for 45 to 60 minutes before serving. This breathing window expands the tight fruit matrix and coaxes the subtle sage, cedar, and mineral complexities into the foreground.
-
The Target Serving Temperature: To keep the rich fruit focused and ensure the 14.5% ABV carries smoothly on the finish, serve this Cabernet at a precise cellar temperature of 62°F to 65°F (16°C to 18°C).
Food Pairings
The structural density, dusty tannins, and integrated oak spice of this Oakville Cabernet make it an exceptional culinary match for rich marbled proteins and earthy, slow-cooked profiles.
-
Flame-Broiled Steaks: An absolute partner for a charcoal-grilled ribeye or a prime New York strip finished with herbed compound butter. The wine's firm tannin framework dissolves rich beef fats seamlessly.
-
Earthy Braised Proteins: The savory, herbal undercurrent of the vineyard mirrors slow-braised lamb shanks infused with rosemary or red-wine-braised beef short ribs served over polenta.
-
Hard Aged Cheeses & Savory Bites: Pair a glass next to a charcuterie board highlighting aged Gouda, sharp Cheddar, or Gruyère, which echo the wine's dusty texture and licorice elements. Earthy mushroom risotto also provides a phenomenal savory counterpart.
