Description
The Finessed, Own-Rooted Soul of Lodi’s East Side
Step into an ethereal, perfume-driven expression of California history with Turley "Kirschenmann Vineyard" Zinfandel. While the Lodi AVA is globally famous for producing heavy, high-alcohol red wines, the coveted Kirschenmann single-vineyard bottling completely rewrites the script. This iconic site is owned, dry-farmed, and protected by Turley's very own head winemaker, Tegan Passalacqua. Highly sought after by elite sommeliers and collectors, Kirschenmann is celebrated for its rare, delicate femininity, delivering an uncompromised masterclass in structural grace, energy, and nervous drive that mirrors the finest wines of the Southern Rhône.
The extraordinary definition of this wine is drawn from its exceptional, own-rooted viticulture. Tucked into an oxbow of the cool Mokelumne River AVA, these ancient, ungrafted, head-trained vines were planted back in 1915 in pure, silica-rich white sand soils on limestone bedrock. Fed by chilling delta breezes that naturally shield the fruit from searing Central Valley heat, the centenarian vines produce a classic, pre-Prohibition field blend, interplanted with tiny amounts of Mondeuse Noire, Cinsault, and Carignan. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for 15 months in gentle, primarily neutral French oak, the wine entirely avoids heavy, over-extracted jamminess to show off its pure, river-born terroir.
Taste Profile & Pairings
-
The Profile: Luminous, translucent medium ruby in the glass. It features a beautifully light-to-medium body, an exceptionally vibrant, high-toned mouthfeel, and silky, fine-grained tannins driven by a refreshing spine of athletic acidity.
-
Flavor Highlights: A remarkably potent, highly fragrant nose of redcurrants, sour kirsch cherries, and orange peel seamlessly unfolds into a complex palate layered with white pepper, Earl Grey tea leaf, crushed rose potpourri, and a striking, mouthwatering undertone of granitic minerality.
-
The Finish: Elegant, long, and remarkably lifted, resolving with a unique, savory hint of dark cocoa and a crisp, citrusy finish.
-
Perfect Food Pairings: Thanks to its high acidity and graceful weight, this elegant Zinfandel is a legendary dining partner. It pairs magnificently with herb-marinated roasted lamb chops, duck breast with a spiced plum reduction, grilled pork tenderloin, or wood-fired mushroom pizzas.
-
Serving Suggestion: Given its delicate, highly perfumed aromatics and complex field-blend makeup, giving this bottle a light 30-minute decant will beautifully amplify its complex floral notes and savory, umami-driven depth.
